“Ever since starting I've just been obsessed with karate and it’s been an integral part of my daily life ever since.

Starting as a very shy unconfident lazy little kid, the fact I’m going to be competing against the best students in the world is still so surreal.”

2023 Soke cup in review

1.  What was your favourite thing(s) about the whole Soke Cup experience?

  • Team Kumite.  Energy of the team/supporters.  More concentrated focus from 6 rings operating to only 2 rings operating for team kumite finals.
  • Watching everyone else's performances.  Everyone doing their personal bests.

2.  What did you learn from the experience?

Treat everything as it is ~ neither good nor bad, just is.

- When competing I was good with this.
- When watching others I experienced the highs and the lows. (need to work on this to conserve energy)

3.  If you were to do it all again, what would you do differently?

Happy with the preparation.  Last time I competed I was younger and couldn't really recall the tournament atmosphere with these preparations.  Now I feel I have a clearer picture of what to expect and can train with this in mind and work on visualisation even better.

4.  What would you say to those who might have their eye on the next Soke Cup?

We all have different personalities but all come away having a great experience.  There is something for everyone.  The Wednesday mornings can be difficult to get up for.
